Skippers Canyon Bridge
Sunday 26th February 2017
The historic Skippers Canyon Bridge is a hive of activity today as the GODZone Pure teams complete a unique discipline. Southern Adventure are manning the technical abseil with four ropes with one team allocated per rope. Race Director Warren Bates does not expect to many snarl ups as the numbers of teams increase during the day. ” You can have four teams rappelling down at the same time. Its a pretty quick descent obviously down into the river and so once everyone is roped up nothings really holding them back. We are operating it on a first come, first served basis and the teams knew that from the outset.”At 91 meters high above the river the suspension bridge is one of the highest and most spectacular in New Zealand. It was commissioned in 1901 at a cost of £4000 which equals aprox $700 000 today.
