THE FEMALE FACTOR
Sophie Hart… She has a heart of gold for adventure, racing, GODZone, and cracking the biggest of smiles.
What puts the fire in your belly for adventure racing?
*The suspense of a new adventure. Being immersed in the simple life of the outdoors for days and then the immense satisfaction of a hot shower and a sleep.
A best AR memory.
*Winning the inaugural godzone in Queenstown. Pack rafting the pantanal in Brazil.
A funny AR memory
*Paddling to treasure island in Fiji in the middle of the night, deciding it seemed like a good place to try and get some food, so pulling ashore. I promptly fell asleep on the beach longer whist Chris, Stu and Nathan helped themselves to a wedding buffet in their paddling attire on Day 6 of the race. They did bring me back some coffee and curry.
Message to other women thinking of giving it a go, or stepping up to GODZone.
*To me, it’s super important to be in a team that you get on with and can trust. Enjoy the training, spend the summer doing some tramping trips and paddling adventures.

DOWN THE HATCH
When else do you get to pig out for days on end feel really good about it? 🐖😁
Consuming 10,000 calories a day is about the mark you need to hit during GODZone, and they’re obtained through numerous ways.
What’s your favourite food when you’re out there in the wilderness doing your stuff?

ARWC Spain - top work Isla Smith! 👏🏼💥
We thoroughly enjoyed watching our Kiwi counterpart Isla Smith @isla__nz storming the AR world champs in Spain, what an athlete, fourth place!
She was racing with local team Torpedo Vidaraid @vidaraid - former number one ranked and this team has placed 2nd twice at the ARWC.
Great coverage by @arwsoceaniaseries - flick onto their page to see and read more.

INSPIRATION AND GOALS. 🤩
Have you been following the Adventure Racing World Champs in Spain??!!
Including one sole Kiwi @isla__nz who’s flying our flag loud and proud with @vidaraid !!!
FIRST STOP…. WANAKA
A number of the local adventure racing and multi sport types will have a grin on their faces this morning about the news that Wanaka will be the first stop for GODZone Chapter 10 in March 2022. 😁
Turn the clock back to Chapter 4, Wanaka was host of one very tough GODZone, where in fact only fourteen teams made full course.
The observant ones reading this post will notice this cool little town is smack bang in the middle of the South Island, thus boasts no coast line nor beach resort status. Hardly a coast to coast or traverse themed destination?!
Therefore, get yourselves here for the pre race side of things where you’ll make the final tweaks to your gear list, be warmly welcomed to Chapter 10, have rego, and maximise your down time with great eateries, beaut waterways, fantastic trails, and even something fun and novel like losing yourself at Puzzle World.
As for the plan from there? Don’t worry, it’s sorted. 😉

Barracuda Kayaks, @barracuda_kayaks they’ve been part n’ parcel of the GODZone story since its inception a decade ago.
This funky bright yellow kayak company is looking to raise capital to expand and develop new products. And it’s asking you to get on board…..
Part owner and shareholder of Barracuda Kayaks Dave Reid said it’s exciting to think that keen paddlers now have an opportunity to be part of the Barracuda story and journey through their own financial investment.
“The closer we can work with those who enjoy and use our product, the better our boats can be.”
GODZone Event Director Warren Bates agrees with Dave, hugely valuing the great long-standing relationship they’ve had throughout their decade of adventuring together.
"Our valued sponsor and partner Barracuda Kayaks is undertaking an equity crowdfund enabling participants to become co-owners of Barracuda from as little as $500.”

THE FEMALE FACTOR
Simone Maier, on adventure racing.
**What puts the fire in your belly?
Exploring a new country in a fast forward kind of way. Seeing places totally off the beaten track out there in the wild, sharing the highs and lows - way more fun and rewarding than just being by yourself. Thinking outside the box to solve problems - if you succeed then these moments are especially rewarding.
**The best memory ?
Hard to just choose. Winning the European Championship in a Swedish team. I broke the rear hub body at the start of a 60km challenging MTB ride with lots of ups and down in the Pyrenees in Spain at night time. We were leading the race, still managed to only lose one place, not a huge time gap to first place. The team work was amazing. Racing the ARWC in Reunion Island, with Team Yealands, NZ. We got badly lost for over eight hours on a challenging trekking section, kept supporting each other and it felt magical how we dealt with this mayor blow. We all had each a picnic table to sleep on or under as the heaaavvvy rain hit us during the night. Also winning the Kathmandu Coast to Coast and following up winning GODZone 2019 in an equal gender team was so amazing /pretty epic! Normally teams race in a 3:1 men women ratio. We raced as 2:2, felt pretty damn good to cross in first place against a competitive field. It was again amazing team work.
**A funny memory?
Should I mention this here.. - one of my teammates had bad chafing between his legs around his important bits, needing to take his pants off and run around naked. We had to withdraw from the ARWC later on in the race. Or when I raced my first ever GZ Race down in Fiordland, team mate Jeremy got sleepmonsters on day 4 and 5, we had to keep yelling at him to stay awake.
**Message to other women considering AR?
If you think about it go and do it! AR is so pure and brings out the best and the worst. Try shorter events first. Leave your make-up bag behind and allow yourself to be free and just be yourself. Enjoy your training and find the right team mates. The fitter and more prepared you are, the better. The AR community is a great bunch of people.
Well would you believe?
It’s not just All Blacks who come and play at GODZone.
Turn the clock back to Chapter 7 Fiordland, where former Springbok and all time great Stefan Terblanche joined in for some rugged fun - 10 days of it to be exact, with Team Merrell from South Africa. Together they completed the full Pure course, his first ever serious taste at adventure racing - what a way to cut his teeth.
Stefan’s muscles proved to be a bit of a heartbreaker for the female GZ crew at the transitions…. Muscles upon muscles anyone?

Posted @withregram • @peaktopeakqueenstown THE CONTINGENCY PLAN: COVID-19
The David Reid Homes Peak to Peak is one of New Zealand’s longest running multisport events. Last year was the first time the event had not run since 1994, despite our best efforts to navigate around the new world of 'Alert Levels' and 'Lockdowns'. Having to cancel in 2020, after many months of planning and organisation, was as frustrating for the organisers as it was for the competitors who had put the effort into training and preparation.
The recent Covid-19 outbreak has once again put everyone's best laid plans under the microscope. Whilst acknowledging the efforts of the Government to get on top of the situation, it is very hard for us to provide definitive guidance on whether the event will take place, given that the information provided only outlines what will likely happen a few days ahead. However, we continue to work towards delivering the event and thank all competitors and our race partners for their patience and understanding at this tricky time.
Be in no doubt, we are fully prepped for delivering the David Reid Homes Peak to Peak on the 11th of September. However, given the expected trajectory of Covid-19 Alert Levels and reading the tea leaves at the bottom of the Government guidance mug, we think that it is highly UNLIKELY that the event will be able to take place on the 11th. No decision will be made on this until the Government has released its forecast for short term Alert Levels on the 6th of September.
Please note: Under Alert Level 2 guidelines, the event is NOT permitted to take place because there are too many competitors, support crews and spectators. The event also visits many busy locations on its journey from The Remarkables to Coronet Peak, which, are largely outside of our control. In short, we need to be at Alert Level 1 for the David Reid Homes Peak to Peak to take place.
We have worked with our key stakeholders/contractors and NZSki to put in place a postponement date of Saturday 16th October.
We’ll keep you posted, thanks for hanging in there with us. Chat again soon.
Thought we might start getting into a few of these.
Here’s one splendid one from @thewild.pack 👌

GETTING INTO THE WEIRD AND WONDERFUL
Stage 6 of Chapter 7, Fiordland.
Not many teams made it this far.
Welcome to Lake Herries, buried deep within the Kepler Mountains.
Adam and Warren went up there with a packraft to reccie the route as there didn’t look like a way around the sides, which proved correct.
Adam dropped his iPhone somewhere on the climb up to the lake - we proves he shouldn’t have been tiktoking on GZ duty.
For the race, a massive logistics exercise in spectacular country. Helicoptering up many inflatable canoes, paddles, boat and outboard, so we could get teams to paddle across, and then retrieve them for later teams.
Very lucky to have legend Braden Currie and his father on hand to welcome broken teams as they arrived at the lake shore.
