To spice things up for the teams and give them some additional directional challenges sometimes the course designers add in some trickier navigation. The Seven Mile mountain bike area near the end of Stage 5 provides such a place and is where this chapters MTBO (mountain bike orienteering) is. The Pure teams must find 12 checkpoints, marked by orienteering flags, before moving on to TA5. These checkpoints are just as important as any other checkpoint on the course in that they must find them all or risk being DQ’d.

See the image for the MTBO map the Pure teams are using.

Note: Pursuit teams do no have to do the MTBO. They just enjoy the single tracks and pass on through.
