Sixty-three teams raced off the GODZone Akaroa start line this morning right on 9am and headed into a full day of multisport disciplines that will see them arrive at the Christchurch Adventure Park later this afternoon.

The teams ran from the Akaroa Reserve on the waterfront and dived straight into a 7km coaster around Akaroa Harbour and Lushington Bay to Takamatua.

“ There was such an amazing vibe at the start-line and the teams were just super pumped to get the adventure started. It’s a wet start to a big day of activities and after 12 months of organization for us and the all the teams it’s great to get everything underway,” says GODZone Race Director Adam Fairmaid.

Stage one of the challenging seven-day expedition adventure race consists of a prologue of made up of 7km coasteering section, 40km mountain bike ride over the Port Hills, a 7km pack rafting section from Diamond Harbour to Governors Bay, and a 10km trek and orienteering stage over the Port Hills and through the Christchurch Adventure Park.

“ The bike ride will be pretty spectacular today up on the tops of the Port Hills and over to Diamond Harbour even with these wet and cloudy conditions,” says Fairmaid. “The lead teams will be moving as fast as they can through each stage to get to the Christchurch Adventure Park later as early as possible to receive the maps for the rest of their 7-day odyssey.”
