Coastguard follow teams along route
Saturday 2nd April 2016
The first leg of the race this afternoon will see competitors run along Kaiteriteri beach, coasteer along the shoreline to Stephens Bay and then kayak to Rabbit Island. They will be accompanied along the way by the coastguard.
The coastguard are just one of a number of organisations lending a hand to make sure competitors are safe out on the course. On the water, there are a number of water and white water safety crews, plus Tasman harbour master Dan Cairney.
Volunteer medics are dotted along the course with a doctor on call to respond to any emergencies.
Teams are also given a thorough safety briefing before they go, with key points pointed out before they leave.
